I would recommendit those fans, and anyone looking for a fun, twisty read that will keep you guessing right to the end。Huge thank you to Penguin Books NZ and Turning Pages NZ for the free review copy! 。。。more

Cal O’Shea-Wallace, Ivy Sterling-Shepard, and Mateo Wojcik in sixth grade skipped school and became friends but time has drive them apart。 Now they all go to Carlton High and hardly speak to each other。 One day they all run into each other at the start of school and are all having a bad day。 They decide skip school again like the past and ahead to head to Boston for the day but the day turns into a disaster when they find the body of Brian Mahoney who won the student local election in the studio Cal O’Shea-Wallace, Ivy Sterling-Shepard, and Mateo Wojcik in sixth grade skipped school and became friends but time has drive them apart。 Now they all go to Carlton High and hardly speak to each other。 One day they all run into each other at the start of school and are all having a bad day。 They decide skip school again like the past and ahead to head to Boston for the day but the day turns into a disaster when they find the body of Brian Mahoney who won the student local election in the studio of Cal's girlfriend。 The three former friends decide to investigate themselves but along the way secrets start to come out and and they find themselves fighting for the truth。 This book is paying honour to Ferris bueller's day off the film。 We have POV's in the book Cal, Ivy and Mateo。 Each character at the start of the book are having a hard day。 Ivy has lost the student local election and feels pressure from her parents to be like her exceptional brother, Mateo mother is struggling with Osteoarthritis so him and his cousin Amber are working multiple jobs and Cal new girlfriend has stood him up again and feels like he doesn't know himself。 They all decide to skip school again for the day but the day takes a disastrous turn for all of them。 Each of them are hiding secrets from each and some have a bigger impact on each character。 I must admit I found Ivy secret quite a big one and won't go into too much about it as might spoilt it but I could see some people in real life not forgiving her。 I didn't like one POV more than other in this book。 Some parts of the story I found to be a bit far fetch but I suppose that's why we read fiction as sometimes we don't necessary want things to be so realistic in the book we are reading。 There author keeps the secrets unfolding the right way through the book to keep the reader engaged in the book。 Overall this wasn't my favourite book by Karen M。 McManus but it is still enjoyable YA thriller which interesting enough story。I received a ARC from Netgalley and Penguin Random House Children’s UK, Penguin for an objection review。 。。。more

* I was sent a early copy to review。 What would happen if Ferris Bueller's day off turned deadly? It would probably look a lot like You’ll be the Death of Me! 'You'll Be the Death of Me' is the latest YA thriller from Karen McManus who has penned such absorbing works as 'One of us is lying' and (my personal favourite) 'Two can keep a secret'。 She has proven that she can weave interesting plots with morally questionable characters, so I was excited to see whether this new novel lives up to its predecessors。 Here, we see former friends Ivy, Mateo and Cal skip school to relive 'The Greatest Day Ever' of their middle school friendship。 When they stumble a 'You'll Be the Death of Me' is the latest YA thriller from Karen McManus who has penned such absorbing works as 'One of us is lying' and (my personal favourite) 'Two can keep a secret'。 She has proven that she can weave interesting plots with morally questionable characters, so I was excited to see whether this new novel lives up to its predecessors。 Here, we see former friends Ivy, Mateo and Cal skip school to relive 'The Greatest Day Ever' of their middle school friendship。 When they stumble across the dead body of a classmate on their travels, everything begins unravelling and it becomes clear no one can be trusted, including our three narrators。I am sad to report that this thriller lacks the bite of McManus' former works。 She has set up an interesting story with a corrupt cast of characters who all seem to have some stake in the central mystery (although the explanation for the opening murder is glaringly obvious from the start)。 There are a couple of genuinely surprising reveals towards the end which I appreciated。 However, the very final "twist" left me feeling cold。 I never felt like there was a genuine threat towards the three teen narrators and the villain of the piece lacked terror due to being underdeveloped。 Overall, this was a solid read but not McManus' best novel。 I would return to some of her earlier thrillers before reading this again, particularly to find more genuinely sinister and threatening characters I felt this was lacking。 3 stars。Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher who provided an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review。 。。。more

Ivy feels like the afterthought, the girl who's always second place whether it's at home or at school elections。 Mateo doesn't have time to worry about things like elections, he's too busy working two jobs to support his family。 Cal almost has too much time to worry about things, and fills in with a stream of people to avoid being alone。 And all of them could really use a day off from their lives。The three of them used to be friends - best friends really。 But years happen, times change, and so d Ivy feels like the afterthought, the girl who's always second place whether it's at home or at school elections。 Mateo doesn't have time to worry about things like elections, he's too busy working two jobs to support his family。 Cal almost has too much time to worry about things, and fills in with a stream of people to avoid being alone。 And all of them could really use a day off from their lives。The three of them used to be friends - best friends really。 But years happen, times change, and so did they。 But when Cal is running late one morning, they all decide to ditch class together like they used to … although they're not the only ones ditching。 When they see one of their classmates acting very odd they unwittingly find themselves at a crime scene。Friends again or not, these three have been thrown into a world of deadly secrets that will keep them bound together forever 。。。 if they make it out alive。 This was initially pitched me to as 'Ferris Beullers Day Off but with murder' and … yeah, pretty much。 I was unsure at first, worried our main trio were slipping into being clichés, but they very quickly became fully formed characters, independent and individual with unique backstories and personalities。 I love the way McManus shows how a characters past has shaped the person we see。 I think every reader will be able to find a little part of themselves in every character。Each chapter felt like a cliff-hanger so this was far too easy to read in one sitting, full of mystery and intrigue - people have hailed McManus the Queen of YA Thrillers and there's definitely a reason behind it。 You'll Be The Death Of Me is a quick, fast-paced drama with dark twists and turns but always with a subtle humour and heart at the centre。 。。。more

So, I always have a hard time rating Karen M。 McManus's books, because on the one hand they are totally trashy and unbelievable, on the other they are extremely entertaining and I always fly through them。 You'll Be the Death of Me is not an exception。 This one is probably one of the more farfetched of her books, but I read it in like 4h total, in three sittings, between exams and life, which for me is not so obvious。 I couldn't believe a single thing that was happening or how the characters were So, I always have a hard time rating Karen M。 McManus's books, because on the one hand they are totally trashy and unbelievable, on the other they are extremely entertaining and I always fly through them。 You'll Be the Death of Me is not an exception。 This one is probably one of the more farfetched of her books, but I read it in like 4h total, in three sittings, between exams and life, which for me is not so obvious。 I couldn't believe a single thing that was happening or how the characters were reacting even if I suspended my disbelief, but I really couldn't stop reading。The characters don't have very distinct voices, and I often confused whose POV I was reading; Ivy, Mateo and Cal were not well developed and their personalities felt very stereotypical。 I would have loved for them to have more layers, but this was totally a plot driven book。The plot twists were predictable, as I always find McManuses' reveals and twists, but they were engaging nonetheless。 I know this makes zero sense, but -- as I said -- I always have a hard time with her books。 There's something addicting about them, that makes you want to keep reading, ignoring all the problems, but once you close the book you are like: "WTF did i just read? Why am I not DNFing this book?"Overall, the book was exactly what I expected and it did entertain me; I will of course be buying myself a finished copy, because despite my ratings, I am a s+cker for McManus's books, but objectively this was not a good story。 Subjectively, it was exactly what I needed to distract myself with, but I recognise its limits。Thanks so much to Netgalley and Penguin Random House for the ARC。 。。。more

This was really good, I loved the characters (even Ivy who started out as super annoying) and I liked the storyline。 Yes some bits were slightly unbelievable but for books like this I always just go with it because I enjoy them so much。 This was a solid story with some really good character development also the ending was such a tease! ARC provided by Random House Children’s via NetGalley for an honest review。This was a fast moving and very addictive read。 There is a slight homage to the 80’s movie, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, but I wouldn’t exactly say it is a recreation of that movie。 The three characters certainly remind me of the movie, but that was about it。 Overall this is another outstanding murder mystery that shouldn’t be missed especially if you liked the author’s other books。The story is told from the points of view o ARC provided by Random House Children’s via NetGalley for an honest review。This was a fast moving and very addictive read。 There is a slight homage to the 80’s movie, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, but I wouldn’t exactly say it is a recreation of that movie。 The three characters certainly remind me of the movie, but that was about it。 Overall this is another outstanding murder mystery that shouldn’t be missed especially if you liked the author’s other books。The story is told from the points of view of Ivy, Mateo and Cal。 They are your typical teen characters, but I still really enjoyed getting to know them all。 They are all hiding secrets, and some of them even had to do with the murder mystery, which made the plot that much more intriguing。Ivy is the smart and overachieving one of the group。 She is the one that comes up with plans and discovers many of the clues。 Mateo is also pretty smart, and he is the one who actually solves a big piece of the puzzle that helps him to figure the whole thing out。 Cal was a great character。 Most of the time I just wanted to give him a big hug and tell him everything was ok, but he does manage to hold his own with the other two and figure some important stuff out。The plot is quite twisty and will keep you reading way into the night。 There are lots of side characters that will either make you laugh or get super mad at。 I loved the way the whole thing is revealed and the real culprit was a bit of a surprise。 I also really liked that the story didn’t end with the big reveal, but we got to see what happened to each of the characters a few months down the line。 I really appreciated that, as it always bugs me when things end with no follow up for the characters。Another stunning book by this author。 I really hope that this isn’t a standalone。 One of the storylines at the end was left open, and I hope that means that there will be a sequel as I really want to see how all of that resolves。https://elnadesbookchat。com 。。。more

Karen McManus has quickly become my go to for a snappy thriller read, and she has yet to disappoint! Karen McManus did it again。。 Queen of YA mystery。 I really liked this book, the twists and turns and the 80's references made it a classic for me。 I love how she took Ferris Bueller's Day off and made a mystery book。 After a rough couple of days and years, three old friends run into each other and decide to recreate "the best day ever" and it turned into a disaster。 Someone gets murdered and they are cast as suspects and must find the real killer so they won't get into trouble。 The only part tha Karen McManus did it again。。 Queen of YA mystery。 I really liked this book, the twists and turns and the 80's references made it a classic for me。 I love how she took Ferris Bueller's Day off and made a mystery book。 After a rough couple of days and years, three old friends run into each other and decide to recreate "the best day ever" and it turned into a disaster。 Someone gets murdered and they are cast as suspects and must find the real killer so they won't get into trouble。 The only part that was cringe-worthy was the teacher/student relationship。 。。。more

I read this whole book in one sitting without taking any breaks because I was hooked the entire time, and even found myself staying up until 1am just to finish it。 The best thing about Karen M。 McManus books is that they are so addictive that I can't help but read them completely in one sitting。 Although this may not be my favourite book that Karen has ever written, I find that her writing, characters and plot have improved so much in every book she writes。 The pacing of this book was so fast, p I read this whole book in one sitting without taking any breaks because I was hooked the entire time, and even found myself staying up until 1am just to finish it。 The best thing about Karen M。 McManus books is that they are so addictive that I can't help but read them completely in one sitting。 Although this may not be my favourite book that Karen has ever written, I find that her writing, characters and plot have improved so much in every book she writes。 The pacing of this book was so fast, probably because it is set entirely over one complete day, and it really helped to make me not want to put this book down。 The plot of 'You'll Be The Death Of Me' was definitely interesting and had me hooked from the beginning。 I did predict the plot twist, which I knew would happen, but I still really enjoyed reading the book overall, and did find myself doubting whether I was right about guessing the plot twist correctly。 I will continue to read everything Karen M。 Mcmanus writes as I can't help but be addicted to her books and she always writes stories that intrigue me so much, and I am always obsessed with the covers of her books, they always look so nice together on my bookshelves。 Thank you to Penguin Random House Children's UK for providing me with an advance copy of this book via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review。 。。。more

Thank you to netgalley for providing an e-galley for review。 Three friends walk into a art studio and one finds a dead body, yep sounds like Karen McManus to me。 As another well-known YA author once said, always start with a murder, and she does。 "You'll Be the Death of Me" is full of the red herrings, twists and turns that readers have come to expect from McManus and she does not disappoint。 Thank you to netgalley for providing an e-galley for review。 Three friends walk into a art studio and one finds a dead body, yep sounds like Karen McManus to me。 As another well-known YA author once said, always start with a murder, and she does。 "You'll Be the Death of Me" is full of the red herrings, twists and turns that readers have come to expect from McManus and she does not disappoint。 。。。more

After reading all of her books, this one ties with “One of Us is Lying” as my favorite。 The characters are well developed with a plot line that has so many twists and turns。 The writing kept the story moving forward while presenting options for a sequel。 I didn’t see the ending coming…and I loved it! #thatendingwasthedeathofme
